Technology Transfer
Commercialising University Science
The Technology Transfer Office is responsible for the management and exploitation of Intellectual Property generated by the University of Salford’s research activities.
We aim to maximise the outcome of University research to benefit industry, University and the wider economy.
For Academics
How we can help
We aim to transfer intellectual property from the university and into the market through:
- Assessing inventions for commercial value.
- Establishing intellectual property rights.
- Licensing the rights to use the IP to commercial partners, or establishing a spin off company as appropriate.
All of our staff have experience of research and so will be able to appreciate your research and understand its key aspects.
IP Management
We identify, assess and protect University intellectual property.
- Identify – we will work with you to identify the valuable aspects of the research.
- Assess – assessing the potential market value of the invention, including due diligence exercises; prior art & freedom to operate searches.
- Protect – we will file for formal IP right positions (patents, trademarks or suchlike) to protect your invention.
IP Exploitation
We have a managed exploitation process where the invention is guided throughout its journey to the market.
Working with the inventor, the team will reach out to leading businesses in the field, drafting and exchanging non-disclosure agreements, arranging meetings and brokering collaborative agreements on your behalf. Supply-side and end user partners will provide confirmation of an idea’s commercial potential, strategic insight to their markets and deliver expertise and resources for the project.
A strong consortium will substantially improve the prospects of winning collaborative research awards and may even directly fund the commercialisation of your intellectual property.
What’s the University policy on IP?
The specifics will depend on the nature of the research contract and your employment status. Please contact b.m.prime@salford.ac.uk for further information.
