We are delighted to welcome Rick Parry to give the first lecture held by the Salford Business School’s Centre for Sports Business.

Rick has operated at the highest levels of British football, having been both the first Chief Executive of the Premier League and CEO of Liverpool FC. His knowledge of sport, finance and business has led to him being involved in an impressive range of sporting and business initiatives.

He studied the feasibility of restructuring professional football in England prior to taking up the Chief Executive’s role at the Premier League and, during his time in charge, he negotiated the biggest ever television deal in the history of British sport.

Rick was also involved with Manchester’s bid for the 1996 Olympics, the legacy of which includes Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium. During his time at Liverpool the club won nine major trophies, including the European Champions League. Since leaving Liverpool in 2009, Rick has been involved in sports-related projects, including chairing the Sports Betting Integrity Panel, and in 2011 he acted as a special adviser to the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee on its inquiry into football governance.

Rick’s talk, entitled ‘How and why the Premier League was formed’ will explore the real reasons why the League was formed and how it came into existence. In particular it will cover:

- the football landscape in 1990
- concerns about the implementation of the post-Hillsborough Taylor Report and the loss of top English players to Italy;
- the renewal of the Football League TV deal in 1992 and the TV deal negotiations
- the role of The Football Association and the significance of The FA Premier League
- the constitution of the new league and the Founder Members’ Agreement.
