Biography
I am a Reader in Digital Media and Business at the University of Salford. I research within the context of Information Systems. My main area of research expertise concern the application of new digital technology to economic, environmental and social systems. I am a current holder of a £1.4m EPSRC Digital Economy Grant as a partner of the collaborative group known as TOTeM (Tales of Things and Electronic MemoryMy work within TOTeM explores the application of digital technology – in this case - Quick Read Codes (QR Codes) and RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) to tag items used in commercial concerns on the high street. In 2011, the TOTeM team won the prize for best new development from BE2; and later won the national EPSRC prize for impact and engagement. I am also a member of the Sustainability + RCUK Network. My research publications include 2 books, over 100 journal papers, conference papers and book chapters. I have disseminated my work internationally and visited 31 countries, working for a short time in China
I am currently a member of the Operations Management and Information Management Academic Unit and was previously a member of the Research Centres for Information Systems and Organisations Centre (ISOS) and the Organisational Behaviour and Leadership Centre. I was returned to all the UK RAE‘s where ISOS gained the top rating of 6* for 2001 and was classed as world leading with international recognition in the 2008 exercise.
Teaching
I generally teach knowledge management related areas, strategic management and the applications of new digital technologies to business.
I am a keen PhD supervisor and supervise areas as outlined above, although will also take on other candidates in related subject areas.
Research Interests
My research interests arise out of my home discipline of knowledge management and information management, and the application of new digital and existing technology to these areas.
The current Tales of Things project can be accessed at
I also have research interests in the area of Leadership and was PI on a research project funded by the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education. This work investigated the leadership traits used by leaders in what are termed “Urband and Edgy” type organisations. The work has been completed locally and nationally the full report can be accessed at file:///Users/mariaburke/Downloads/final_report.pdf
Work is now underway to discover if the traits are still apparent in the international arena.
I have also undertaken work with colleagues from other Schools eg Phil Brown and team on the Low Energy House in Salford. The full report of this work can be accessed at
