Mike has over 40 years’ experience in the construction industry. He joined Balfour Beatty in Scotland in 1970, where he worked on civil engineering projects before transferring to the fledgling building business where he rose to become the general manager in Scotland.
Since then he has held the posts of managing director of Balfour Kilpatrick (now Balfour Beatty Engineering Services) and managing director of Mansell (which Balfour Beatty acquired in 2003). He is currently the CEO of Balfour Beatty’s Civil, Building & Building Services operations, Construction Services UK.
Mike has been involved in major projects across the UK and has been the account manager for BAA at Heathrow since 1999. He oversaw the T5 rail and station fit out project, Terminal 2B (phase one) and currently Terminal 2B (phase 2).
He has been a member of the Chartered Institute of Building since 1994 and was appointed a fellow in 1998. Mike is chair of Balfour Beatty’s worldwide sustainability strategy group, was chair of The Prince’s Trust Construction & Business Services Leadership Group until last year and now serves on the board. He is also a member of the executive committee of the UK Contractors Group.
Last year, Mike received an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from Salford University, for his contribution to the construction industry and work with Salford on the digital tool set for the modern construction industry.
