Friday 25 November 2011
The Chancellor of the University of Salford, Irene Khan, has been elected as the new Director-General of the prestigious International Development Law Organisation (IDLO).

Dr Khan, who has been Chancellor of the University since 2009, has become IDLO’s Director-General.  The organisation provides developing countries, countries in economic transition and those emerging from armed conflict with the resources, tools and professional skills to establish or strengthen the rule of law and governance.

A former Secretary General of Amnesty International, Dr Khan has extensive experience in international organisations and international human rights.  She will take up her four-year term at the IDLO in January 2012.

“It is a great honour to be selected for this prestigious position,” said Dr Khan. “I look forward to working closely with governments, other stakeholders and IDLO’s professional staff to fulfil the organisation’s mission to strength the rule of law and good governance.”

Dr Khan studied law at the University of Manchester and then, in the United States, at Harvard Law School, specialising in public international law and human rights.

She is a Bangladeshi citizen.
