Biography

Richard Fitton is a Lecturer in Energy Efficiency in the School of the Built Environment. He leads the monitoring work undertaken within ABERG and is involved in a number of projects with regards to whole house heat loss testing (co-heating), U Value measurement, as well as product and retrofit package testing within the Energy House.

Richard has previously been a Building Surveyor and Energy Manager in the public sector. He also advises on the qualification of SAP Assessors. Richard was a contributor on the Zero Carbon Hub Testing Work Group for the Closing the Gap Between Design and As-Built Performance project.

He sits on a number of international committees, leading a group designing building performance test methodologies for dwellings (co-heating) and also leading a task group for the International Energy Agency (Annex 71), examining the use of smart meters in the diagnosis of energy efficiency issues in dwellings.

Richard holds a place on the SAP scientific integrity group which examines the changes required, and performance of the regulatory energy modelling tool in the UK.

Teaching

I currently deliver modules around retrofitting buildings to final year building surveying students, and supervise PhD students in the area of energy modelling and building performance measurement.

Research Interests

My main research interest in the measured energy performance of domestic buildings, both new build and retrofitted.  I have a special interest in Energy Pathology, which examines issues with the energy performance of buildings, and the explanation/diagnosis of gaps in a buildings performance.

My other interests are:

Building pathology

Energy modelling

Sensor design for building physics applications

Window coverings and energy performance

Qualifications and Memberships

BSc in Building Surveying

PhD in Building Physics

MRICS (Chartered Building Surveyor)
