I am a Quantity Surveyor by profession with 15 years industrial experience working on a range of large commercial developments such as schools, hospital, pharmaceutical laboratories, infrastructure works and sustainable communities.
I am now in my 10th year of teaching at University level across a number of different disciplines engaging both students and employers in a teaching environment to meet the needs of today’s ever changing market place.
As part of my role here at the University of Salford, I am responsible for encouraging all students to engage in some form of industrial practice, whether it be a summer internship, work shadowing opportunity or a yearlong industrial placement with an industrial partner.
I have spent the last academic year organising site visits for all students across the school to afford students the opportunity to gain an insight in the working practice and technologies that are currently being used on today’s construction sites. This allows students to contextualise their learning, forge their own network of industrial contacts whilst gaining the opportunity to see a wide range of projects prior to embarking on their own professional career.
I am part of the Construction and Project Management team but contribute to a range of programmes and levels within the school.
The modules I am currently responsible for are;
Multi-disciplinary project – This module engages all programmes and all students at level 5. It is generally based on a live projects where students are exposed to a live client and industrial practices and procedures
Professional Practice – A level 6 module designed to further students’ knowledge regarding corporate strategy and business ethics
An introduction to Construction Management – A level 4 module designed to introduce the tools of construction management
Construction Technology - A level 4 module, specifically for the HNC cohort, designed to give students a general understanding of basic construction methods, practices that are currently used within the Built Environment. Students are encouraged to apply theory to given practical issues thus developing their problem solving ability.
