Biography

I am the Head of the School of the Built Environment (SoBE), University of Salford, the top Research Power School in the previous Research Assessment Exercise in the UK. I am an Academic Director for the £11M EPSRC funded interdisciplinary IMRC in Health and Care Infrastructures Research and Innovation Centre (HaCIRIC) and PI for Salford University. I was previously the Director of the £8M EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) funded Salford Centre for Research and Innovation (SCRI) in the built and human environment. I am a Professor of Process Management, Director of Protocol Lab, a spin out company resulting from the Process Protocol Research, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Fellow of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and Senior Associate of the Royal Academy of Medicine. I have published more than 120 academic referred papers, many industrial reports and 2 books. My current research is around Healthcare infrastructure and better decision making in complex setting, following an outcomes/benefits based philosophy.

Teaching

TEACHING LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT

I am an accredited Fellow member of The Higher Education Academy (I was accredited by the Institute for Learning and Teaching in 2003, which since merged into The Higher Education Academy).

I have been developing research-led teaching material since 1995, when I was supporting teaching as part of my Masters and PhD studies and I was the Programme director for the MSc Built Environment in Healthcare (until 2008), where I also developed and delivered the compulsory module of Built Environment for Healthcare with other colleagues. The MSc and module were developed with the participation of regional and national representatives of user communities such as the department of health, NHS, CABE, PCTs, etc. They also participated and continue to do so in its delivery. In outline:

  • Development of the modules on ‘project and process systems’ and ‘process management’ workbook. This was largely based on my expertise in process management where, state-of-the-art research outputs have been incorporated for postgraduate teaching purposes for a number of masters courses (1999, 2001).
  • Developed the Process Management in Construction, Workbook: Module Ten, The Masters in Construction IT, (1998).
  • External Lecturer for the Trafford Manufacturing Institute which now incorporates the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) funded by the DTI. Lectures delivered on Requirements captures and concurrent engineering. The audience was mainly industry practitioners (1998-1999)
  • Occasional lecturer for UMIST for the department of Civil and Structural Engineering, Project Management Group (1998-1999).
  • Teaching the Masters distance learning ‘lean and agile systems’ module in 2004 and ‘process and project systems’ module in 2006.
  • Lectures for the MSc in Construction IT at Salford and the IGDS course (1998).
  • Lecturer on the final year of the BSc in Quality Management, on ‘Quality in Product Design and Development’ for the School of Management at Salford (1996-1998). I was responsible for developing the course material and delivering the lectures and tutorials, including setting exam questions and assignments, developing marking schemes and presenting final assessment marks to the exam board.
  • Developing an Integrated Project Process. Rethinking Construction Training Toolkit, Module sponsored by DTI, CIRIA, DBF, CBPP, Rethinking Construction. (Published by CIRIA) (2003)
  • Responsible for running a number of tutorials, laboratory sessions, and lectures for the MSc in Advanced Manufacturing, BEng in Manufacturing Management and BSc in Quality Management. I also ran tutorials on the Myer-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) as a means of establishing a knowledge base for designing work teams and managing the personal development of people. I have since used this knowledge in managing and organising research teams (1995-1998).

I am a strong believer that teaching needs to reflect state-of-the-art research and practice-based knowledge in terms of ensuring the relevance of the knowledge presented to practitioners and preparing an effective workforce which will bring innovation into the sector. Most of my teaching illustrates this. I have also been involved with two teaching related funded projects as outlined below:

  • RIF Faculty funding to examine technology transfer from research to postgraduate teaching and training. (£2K) (2003) Lead Investigator with Professor Ghassan Aouad and Dr. Dilanthi Amaratunga. This project resulted in a best practice framework for transferring state-of-the-art research knowledge into postgraduate teaching. 1 journal paper and 3 conference publications have been published.
  • RIF Funding £10K (2004). An extension of the previous RIF project on transferring research knowledge to undergraduate teaching.

Research Interests

I have been involved in more than £15M worth of research projects (also involved in £10M research proposals that were not successful), as shown below:

  • Secure Urban Environments by Design. European Hippokrates Programme. With Prof. Rachel Cooper (PI) and Dr. Caroline Davey (£43,766). (2001-2002). The project involved 7 European countries and looked at the use of design as a means of providing secure built environments for society. This project was successful and resulted in a follow on EU funded project investigating the development of a European Resource directory for securing urban environments by design.
  • Network of Experts in Construction IT (NeCIT), with Professors Ghassan Aouad (PI), Yacine Rezgui, Grahame Cooper, Rachel Cooper and Bingu Ingirige, funded by the EPSRC (£19K) (2003-2004). The network aimed to develop a critical mass for construction IT in the UK to bid for EU funding. Various funding proposals were developed and the EPSRC post project review considered the outputs as significant.
  • Managing Change and Dependency funded by EPSRC (£204k) (2001-04) with Aouad, Barrett, Cooper, Goulding and Sexton.
