Biography

I was educated at Manchester University’s School of Architecture, gaining a B.A. with First Class Honours in 1980 and a B.Arch with Distinction in 1983. In the final year of my postgraduate degree I was awarded the School’s Heywood Silver Medal and won national RIBA Prizes for my dissertation and design thesis respectively. In 1984 I gained ARB (Architects Registration Board) status and was elected to the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects). My subsequent 8 years of practice culminated in a partnership in Hodder Sanderson, the practice winning the Royal Fine Arts Commission ‘Building of the Year’ Prize in 1992 for its design of the Colne Swimming Pool building (joint winner with Sir Norman Foster’s Sackler Galleries project). In 1992 I became a Senior Lecturer at University College Salford, and subsequently a Lecturer at the University of Salford when the two institutions merged in 1997. In 2001 I was accepted as a Member of the Institute of Teaching and Learning, now HEA. I am currently employed in the University’s School of Built Environment where I teach on both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the field of architecture/design and construction technology.

Alongside my academic career, I have maintained an involvement in architectural practice, undertaking architectural consultancy as a sole practitioner. I have a varied portfolio, including work in education, retail and residential sectors.

Outside of work I enjoy cycling, running, fell walking, reading biographies, watching Preston North End FC, and listening to music. I have a wife (Denise) and two sons (William, 24 and Edward, 20).
