Biography
I am a Senior Lecturer in the School of the Built Environment and a Member of the Research Centre for Disaster Resilience (CDR). My main research interests are in the area of flood adaptation and community resilience against flooding and other weather extremes. I have been the co-investigator of the EPSRC funded Community Resilience to Extreme Weather (CREW) project, and the principal investigator for the RICS Education trust funded “Developing Flood Expert Knowledge in Chartered Surveyors” (DEFENCES). Under DEFENCES I investigated the recovery of small and medium scale enterprises during the aftermath of the devastating flood event at Cockermouth in Cumbria in 2009.
I am the programme leader for the MSc Quantity Surveying and MSc Quantity Surveying (Mechanical and Electrical) programmes. I am a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS) and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy of UK.
I currently supervise PhD students in areas of flood rilsk adaptation, post disaster reconstruction, community resilience, knowledge management, ebusiness, technology transfer, capacity building / capability improvement. I serve in the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Disaster Resilience in the Built Environment (IJDRBE) and a regular reviewer of the Journal of Construction Management and Economics, Construction Innovation, International journal of disaster resilience in the built environment and the ITCON journal.
Teaching
I am the programme leader of the MSc QS and QS (M&E) programmes and also teach Process and Project Systems module, which is a core module offered within MSc Project Management in Construction / MSc Quantity Surveying and MSc Quantity Surveying (M&E) programmes. I was also instrumental in internationalising our programme delivery and as such launched a blended learning delivery of the MSc QS programme in Sri Lanka.
