The School of the Built Environment has a long tradition of international engagement and thought leadership. The combination and coherence of the School's international activity and internationalisation demonstrates a formidable environment of innovation, global research and scholarship arenas, and a virtual knowledge exchange network of unprecedented capability.

The School has enjoyed a truely international environment at both staff and student levels for many years, and our friends, academic partners and students across the globe are a testament of the need for any higher education institution and indeed higher education itself to address global issues such as sustainability, regeneration and disaster management.

With the introduction of a structure within the University to formally recognise and support international activity, and in line with each of the five University’s strategic objectives, the School presents the following values and principles as part of its multi-dimensional international strategy:

  • International partnerships - To develop, implement and review an International Partnership Strategy to support partnerships for:
    • the development and delivery of programmes and courses at all levels with overseas institutions;
    • research links with overseas institutions;
    • the development of partnerships with international business for disseminating and commercialising our research outcomes, and delivering Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
  • Recruitment of individual international students - To establish new ways of working in developing overseas market intelligence and optimise overseas student recruitment (undergraduate, postgraduate taught and postgraduate research) across all course types (existing and new courses).
  • Development of an international portfolio of courses (including Research and Engagement) - Through the international partnership strategy, to develop and pilot new course delivery models and research programmes with overseas academic institutions.
  • Internalisation and Student Experience - To embed a culture of internationalism across the University by identifying and promoting specific initiatives to improve the student experience, ensuring all University courses offer the best preparation for its students as ‘global citizens’ in a global employment context.
  • Enabling - Establish appropriate governance and communication arrangements for strategy development and implementation, including a comprehensive communications and stakeholder engagement plan to support effective engagement with internal and external audiences.

Constructing educational partnership with Sri Lanka

In a partnership with the Colombo School of Construction Technology (CSCT), the School of the Built Environment at the University of Salford became the first foreign university to offer a full degree programme in quantity surveying (QS) in Sri Lanka, with the aim of doubling the number of professionally accredited QS graduates to come out of that country.

CSCT is a private college associated with the University of Moratuwa (Moratuwa has a long association with Salford) which is one of Sri Lanka’s leading public universities and leads the country in areas of architecture, quantity surveying and planning, and has a long association with Salford.

CSCT currently offers the University of Salford BSc in Quantity Surveying with RICS accreditation (this is the first course of its kind to receive this accreditation) full-time and in-country. An inaugural intake of about 15 students has completed their first semester of year one of this academic programme and has established an unambiguous presence for the University of Salford within Sri Lanka. The college intends to expand its intake for the degree course, which is taught by local experts and closely supervised by Salford Academics, to 50 students per annum now that RICS accreditation has been achieved. The course will last four years which will include a work placement year.

Professor Dilanthi Amaratunga, Associated Head of Internationalisation at the School of the Built Environment said: “This is a world first for Sri Lanka and part of Salford’s ongoing long term relationship with the country. It also means that more Sri Lankans can study their chosen subject in their home country, making this chosen career pathway an affordable venture”.
