2013
- The second AHRC-supported Chinese Film Forum UK symposium took place on 29-30 January 2013 at the Chinese Arts Centre, Manchester, as part of the Research Network project. Keynote was delivered by Prof Chris Berry from Kings College. Organiser: Dr Andy Willis.
- The Charles Parker Day is an annual event held to recognise the work of the late BBC producer and celebrates ‘the radio feature – past, present and future’. This year, the 10th Charles Parker Day took place on Friday 22 March and was hosted by the University of Salford in the Digital Performance Lab at its MediaCityUK campus.

- Two of our PhD students have passed vivas: Dan Ward, and Ira Yusof.
- On 17 July 2012, Prof George McKay was appointed to an AHRC Leadership Fellowship for the Connected Communities Programme, starting in September 2012. Read the full story»
- Prof Ben Light has been appointed as a Senior Editor of the Journal of Information Technology.
- Prof Seamus Simpson is part of the PriceWaterhouseCoopers team engaged in an EU-funded evaluation of the Body of European Regulators in Electronic Communications (March 2012 on). This project examines the degree to which the new European regulator has succeeded in contributing to the development of the internal market for electronic communications.
- International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM UK & Ireland) biennial conference, September 5-7 (lead organiser: Prof George McKay). The leading British music journalist and author Barney Hoskyns was our keynote speaker.
- Oppositions: An Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Conference, 28-29 September (organisers include CCM PGRs Everette Ndlovu, Danny Cookney).
- We hosted the major international conference of the Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR) in October (lead organiser: Prof Ben Light)
- Dr Carole O'Reilly was invited to join English Heritage’s National Review of Research Priorities for Urban Parks, Designed Landscapes and Open Spaces as one of two academic consultants. The project, running until August 2013, aims to identify the research needs of those engaged in the conservation and management of such sites.
- Dr Michael Goddard was appointed co-editor of the journal Studies in Eastern European Cinema.
- Anthony Burgess and Cinema film season at Cornerhouse, Manchester, 11-30 June, was curated by Dr Andy Willis, part of the IABF conference events.
- DigCult#12: Theory, Context & the Internet conference, June 13-14, MediaCityUK (co-organiser: Prof Ben Light).
- 6th International Comedy Conference: Drawing The Line - Comics, Comedy & Comics. University of Salford / MMU, May 31-June 1 (Dr Chris Lee).
- New grant! Dr Andy Willis is co-investigator in the Chinese Film Forum UK research network funded by the AHRC. Total grant: £29,000.
- New grant! Prof George McKay is funded by the AHRC Connected Communities programme for the project Community Gardening, Creativity and Everyday Culture. Total grant: £79,000.
- New grants! Prof Ben Light is part of a Salford Media Sociology team awarded funds by AHRC/NESTA/Arts Council England for working with Imperial War Museum, London Symphony Orchestra, and partners. Two grants: £84,500, £67,270.

- Congratulations to Seamus Simpson, CCM’s Professor of Media Policy, elected Vice-Chair of the International Communication Association’s Communication Law and Policy Division. Seamus takes up his post after the 2012 ICA conference in Phoenix. (November 2011)
Asia Triennial Manchester II film programme, 1 Oct-26 Nov, Cornerhouse, Manchester, co-curated by Dr Andy Willis. Includes six UK film premieres and a retrospective of Cannes award-winning director Brillante Mendoza, in Q&A with Dr Willis.
Inaugural professorial lecture by Gareth Palmer, Professor of Media, Tuesday 8 November 2011, 6.15 pm, MediaCityUK. 'Men should talk', a lecture about how men negiotiate the representations of masculinity circulating in the media.
