Communication, Cultural and Media Studies Research Centre
Groups & Collaborations
CCM is characterised by an engagement with the social operations of culture and media. We have established a number of collaborative research groups, which in practice are flexible and dialogic:
- Screen media and media practice - from European film and national culture to film/radio broadcast practice, through to television and (future) media technologies (Blaker, Fairclough, Goddard, Halligan, Hope, Jones, Knudsen, Lee, Mundy, Palmer, Willis)
- Media and cultural studies - post-subcultures, popular music, community and local cultures, media and cultural history / policy, journalism, theory (Archetti, Birchall, Buse, Goddard, Halligan, Harker, Jones, Lee, McKay, Moore, O'Reilly, Wolfenden)
- Digital media - inherently interwoven with above, but also some key areas of exploration and critical innovation, including gaming, social media, technology, open source, policy (Ali, Goddard, Light, Lin, Murphy, Simpson).
Creative, critical collaborations
CCM has collaborative links with other groups interested in the creative and cultural industries across the university, including in particular:
- FIRM - Framework for Innovation & Research in MediaCity project, Salford's multi-million cross-Research Council international consortium
- Centre for Social Research - for work in the sociology of culture, media and technologies
- Information Systems, Organisation and Society Research Centre - for work in digital technologies
- International Media Centre - for connections and projects with media industry and across the creative economy
- Digital Cluster - for teaching, research and industry activities around digital cultures and future media
- Salford Music Research Centre - for common research interests around musical cultures.
