Music

The University of Salford’s Music Directorate is a place of diverse musical vibrancy. We have a strong sense of tradition as well as a keen eye for innovation.

It was here that the first degree in popular music was founded, alongside our proud history of brass band, jazz and classical musicianship.

Our breadth of genres ensure a unique blend of musical experience for all of our students, many of whom go on to carve very successful musical careers.

Indeed, we have strengths in music composition, performance and musicology across many musical styles and genres, and our music technology expertise encompasses many facets of the field to the highest of levels.

The public are invited to our many shows - you can download the full music programme for January - June 2013.

Our teaching is completely serviced by practitioners regularly engaged in industry and profession. This musical breadth is founded upon international staff research profiles and complemented by our very healthy PhD and DMA student population.

We stand poised to make innovative curriculum developments at both undergraduate and Master’s level in the areas of Live-Sound, Generative and Interactive music. In addition, our stylistic and genre diversity will continue to take in ever-broader music horizons through our Ethnomusicology practice.

We remain focused and committed to the benefits that music brings to our society and local communities. This is best evidenced by our drive to introduce community music subjects at Master’s level and our extraordinarily healthy music performance and outreach calendar, featuring an international array of visiting artists and collaborators.

Please feel free to visit us and savour for yourself our welcoming and creative musical environment.
