Research focused on the design issue of user interfaces in relation to a visitor experience at Chester Zoo. This encompassed the development of a hand held visitor guide + related interactive content, pre visit + post visit website, interactive tableaus + experience environments, way finding and brand signage. Research identified the attributes of coherence and connectivity as being key to the legibility& usability of content. The counter play to this logic was the need for the experiential quality of the ‘visit’ to be ambient, ludic, varied, exploratory and individually patterned. The application of emotional branding and enriching variable material design is required to imbue the visitor experience with enrichment, inquiry and pleasure.

Key Areas: User Experience, User interface, Product Semantics, Emotional Branding, Product Development Strategies
