Tim Isherwood has worked as a freelance designer/ illustrator/ artist and typographer since graduating from Stockport College in 1994. His specialism is in the area of Typography, using the medium in the production of artworks for exhibit, illustrations for commission, and typeface creation for freelance and research based purposes.
Having worked in both F&HE education for the last decade, at Stockport College (Foundation – Visual Communication & BA (Hons) Graphic Design), University of Salford (H.N.D & BA(Hons) Graphic Design) and Associate Lectureship at Sheffield Hallam University (BA (Hons) Graphic Design), he is well placed to assist students in their progression from Level 3 to Level 4, helping them manage their expectations and meet the challenges and rigours of independent study. Having accepted a full-time position at the University of Salford on the BA (Hons) Graphic Design course in 2010, Tim has been able to fulfill the role of Level 4 Co-Ordinator, conceiving and delivering content, assessing and feeding back through tutorial support, and guiding the students toward a considered decision as to their pathway choice at Level 5. Further to his Level 4 responsibilities, Tim also teaches at Level 5 on the Communication pathway and assists at postgraduate level on the Communication Design pathway within the MA portfolio.
Having completed a Masters in Contemporary Fine Art at the University of Salford in 2009, in which he looks abstractly at the role Graphic Design and Advertising play in shaping our society, he produced an installation work exploring a cyclical narrative using stop-motion techniques to produce a film that, within the context of the installation space, questioned the viewers perception of a visual reality.
Current research interests and investigations include a continued dialogue, developed in varying forms over several years, into the design, usage, social intervention and interpretation, quantitative assessment, digital development, democratisation and beauty of typographic form.
Founder of Salford Type Foundry, to be launched in November 2012, which is a web-based repository for the experimental, display and text based typefaces generated by the students of the BA (Hons) Graphic Design programme.
