Biography
My background is in product development and design management. I graduated from Salford with a BSc in Product Design & Development in 2002. I working in industry and universities around the North West for a number of years and also ran my own design management consultancy helping small businesses develop product strategies around design, development & production. I began a lectureship at Salford University in 2008 as I am dedicated to helping develop designer’s business understanding in the context of innovation and creativity and the enormous economic impact design activities generate in globally competitive markets.
Teaching
My approach to teaching in design is focused on the practical application of product development methods and the way in which they are influenced by business practice and the micro and macro drivers of the increasingly globalised marketplace for design. The growth of the BRICs economies, environmental imperatives, new economics, social innovation and ubiquitous technologies are a few examples of the political, economic, social & technological changes that are important topics for a design student to understand. I have combined this with a strong emphasis on the visual culture that surrounds the designer. There is a focus on the students developing their own interests and research work that enhances their understanding and employability. I have sought to introduce innovative teaching and learning methods to engage students. Inspired by the practices studied whilst undertaking the PGCert in Higher Education Teaching Practice & Research I began to integrate my familiarity with learning technologies into modules and use blended learning techniques. I am using these methods to further support students with learning disabilities, enhancing their learning experience and improving the quality of their work.
Research Interests
I have published papers in several key topic areas which include:
- Design Management and models of sustainability in small businesses
- Pedagogy in Design Education: Examining the effective teaching and support of students with special needs and how to introduce technology led methods that enhance the teaching of design.
- Design for Development: How designing does not always have to be regarded as adding-value to commercial products, it can be used to fight poverty and address many of the UN’s millennium development goals.
