Biography

I am Director of Journalism and Communications at the University of Salford, having been a full-time journalist and newspaper editor for 13 years before moving into lecturing in journalism 14 years ago.

As Director of Journalism and Communications I am fortunate to head a terrific team of dedicated professionals offering a range of programmes including BA and MA in Journalism, BSc in Media Technology and Mobile and Internet TV, BSc in Professional Broadcast Techniques, MA International and Online Journalism, MA Social Media and Masters in Research programmes in Journalism, Creative Media, Music, Performance and Art and Design.

Teaching

My main areas of teaching are theory and ethics in news reporting for print and online journalism; newspaper and magazine design; and photojournalism. I teach on both the undergraduate journalism programmes and the new MA International and Online Journalism programme.

Research Interests

My main research interests are in teaching and learning, especially in journalism, with two particular foci for my Doctorate in Education research:

a) the development of creative use of language that turns a wordsmith into a maestro wordsmith, and whether such creativity can be taught and assessed in HE;¿

b) teaching and learning within communities of practice and conflicts that can arise between the communities we teach the students in and the ones we are preparing them to enter.

Other interests are in different styles of learning and teaching and forms of communication, including the non-verbal communication skills I am developing in my study of various forms of natural horsemanship
