Biography

Whilst studying Interior Design at Kingston Polytechnic (now university), I was tutored, amongst others, by pioneering interior designer Ben Kelly, and the TV and film designer Natasha Kroll.

I began my career in London working for interior design companies on commercial projects, later moving to the BBC as an Art Director.

I moved to Manchester for a staff position as a Design Assistant at the BBC, art-directing on dramas like Making Out and the cult sci-fi series Red Dwarf. Later, as a Production Designer, I was responsible for the design of a broad range of productions from daytime magazines, dramas, and documentaries.

After 10 years I left the BBC to become self-employed but continued designing for BBC Manchester on a free-lance basis whilst designing corporate events and TV commercials for independent production companies. I managed the design department at Granada Satellite Broadcasting and was responsible for productions across a number of channels. I had also by then started teaching part time.

As I enjoyed teaching I decided to continue my own educational journey by completing a PGCE.

Teaching

We encourage free thinking and design experimentation. I encourage students to design according to their individual view of the world. We don’t have a house style as this could arguably restrict creativity. We also introduce our students to a variety of career options within each subject area to broaden interest and improve employability.

I am an HE External Examiner, Link Tutor and Admissions Tutor
