'Topping off' for new £55m Arts and Media building

Monday 28 September 2015

The University’s new £55million New Adelphi building passed a milestone with a topping-out ceremony held on Monday.

BAM Construct UK secured the highest beam on the seven-storey ‘Gateway’ building with Vice-Chancellor Helen Marshall tightening the final bolt on the roof.

The 16,000ft2 building will house the Schools of Arts & Media and the School of the Built Environment.

The VC viewed progress on the project along with Stephen Talboys Director of Estates and Property Services, his deputy Chris Large and executives from BAM.

Vision

Professor Marshall said: “This New Adelphi will be critical to the delivery of our vision, offering real world experiences for our students in Digital, Arts and Performing Arts

“We thank BAM for this iconic building, which will be a gateway to this university not only in a physical presence but also intellectually and academically.”

Simon Atkinson, BAM Project Director said the topping out was a “milestone in a journey with the University over three years or more and promised to deliver a “unique building” which is a credit to the vision of the University’s leadership.”

The partnership has included a programme of education for students and the wider community, whereby BAM have coordinated 23 work placements and more than 50 apprenticeships.

Grand arch

The site is really taking shape with the cantilever arch, the glass envelope and the exterior landscaping progressing quickly and all built to BREEAM excellence sustainability standards.

Professor Marshall added: “The New Adelphi is not only visually stunning but it is planned to specifically enhance our great work.

“You have to build buildings from the inside out, by which I mean you decide what you need to do and then plan the space you need. It’s wonderful to think that this time next year, it will be full of staff and students raring to go.”

The New Adelphi Building will be open to students in September 2016.
