Key media figures to attend Student Journalism Awards event
Leading media expert Steve Hewlett will be the keynote speaker at the University of Salford’s Student Journalism Awards tomorrow night (Thursday 9 May).
The Guardian columnist and BBC Radio 4 Media Show presenter, who is also visiting professor of Journalism and Broadcast Policy at the University, will join other VIP guests from the world of print, online, TV and radio at the MediaCityUK event, which has been organised by a team of students and promises the full red-carpet treatment.
The awards are sponsored by educational charity the Lady Monica Cockfield Memorial Trust and celebrate the work of journalism students across all years and courses. Examples of exceptional work have been submitted to a number of categories, including Scoop of The Year.
Key media guests will include Richard Frediani, programme editor of ITV’s early evening news; Manchester Evening News managing editor and Radio Manchester presenter Eamonn O’Neal; Manchester Evening News Head of Communities David Lafferty; Key 103 radio news executives John Pickford and Paul Lockitt; ITV news reporter and presenter Elaine Willcox and BBC radio journalist Caroline Cheetham.
Photography and BA TV and Radio students will also be on hand to help produce a special edition of Quays News, the University’s dedicated student TV news channel.
Paul Broster, Acting Programme Leader for MA Journalism and Joint Programme Leader for BA Journalism, said: “The students have worked together to come up with a great event – the chance to meet some leading industry figures and celebrate some superb work.”
Student organiser Fizah Tahir added: “This is an event inspired by students – we have a red carpet, smart dress code, photographers and entertainment. It will be great fun, as well as a serious celebration of what we do in journalism.”
