Awards for outstanding teachers and departments announced

There’s been plenty to celebrate for the School of Arts & Media this week at Graduation, with a round of awards for outstanding teaching staff and departments who have made a real difference.

Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Awards winners:

BA Hons Fashion
This programme was a pioneer in offering a pathway in styling and imagemaking which has helped ensure that it is an attractive alternative to many other specialist fashion degrees. The team leading our programme has gained national recognition for the quality of students’ work, participating in shows in London and securing opportunities for our graduates nationally and internationally. Uncompromising in their commitment to quality, the programme team consistently brings out the best in our talented students.

BA Hons Graphic Design
The graphic design team have been proactive in offering a range of student-focused enhancement activities which are embedded into the curriculum and which give their students opportunities to engage with industry and the creative community. They have worked with MediaCityUK on a range of events such as the “Decode/Recode” project. In this, our programme team are leading the way in curriculum design in a vibrant and rapidly changing area that is attracting ever-widening interest.

Vice-Chancellors’s Research Excellence Awards winners:

Professor Ben Light, Professor Paula Ormandy and Cristina Vasilica
Professor Ben Light, Professor in Digital Media, in partnership with Professor Paula Ormandy, an experienced health service researcher leads in long-term conditions, and Cristina Vasilica, a PhD student, have together developed focused research on the use and application of digital and social media for health promotion.

Paula, Ben and Cristina won the award for their work with young people and sexual health, and in particular for two widespread digital health campaigns to increase cervical screening for Lesbian and Bisexual women and young women aged 24-29 years throughout the North West.

This programme of research extends theoretical knowledge in the use of Web 2.0 and the Internet ‘Meme’ culture to test out and identify appropriate digital mechanisms that can be used to evaluate future health promotion campaigns and create an evidence base for digital health information provision.
