International Foundation Year

The International Foundation Year (IFY) is a course which prepares international students for an undergraduate degree at university in the United Kingdom. The course is for students who have finished high school in their own country but don’t yet have the qualifications to go straight on to a British course. It is also for students who may already have the required qualifications, but would like time to practice their English language skills alongside their chosen subject areas, whilst getting accustomed to life at university in the UK.

The IFY starts in September and provides students with tuition in English and study skills, as well as subjects relating to their chosen degree course. When students pass the IFY at the required standard, they will then be able to progress onto degree courses in subject areas including Art, Design, Media, Music and English Literature.

Language Skills

Our English and Study Skills classes will help you to develop the skills you need to make a success of your chosen degree. Even if you have some previous knowledge of English you will need to know how to write academic English, undertake projects in English, understand lectures and takes notes, give presentations and carry out academic research.

The foundation year will provide you with the language skills required in order to make the most of your undergraduate course, as well as give you the time and space to fully integrate into the life of the university and the wider city. Whilst on the course, you will also have access to the Language Resource Centre, which offers state-or-the-art audio-visual and IT facilities for the teaching and learning of languages. It provides a high-speed network environment giving access to advanced software packages used by language students. All English language teaching is also accredited by the British Council.

Entry Requirements

We welcome applications from students who may not have formal/traditional entry criteria but who have relevant experience or the ability to pursue the course successfully. The Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) process could help you to make your work and life experience count. The APL process can be used for entry onto courses or to give you exemptions from parts of your course.

Two forms of APL may be used for entry: the Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (APCL) or the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL). International applicants are also required to show a proficiency in English: an IELTS score of 4.5 is proof of this.
