At the School of Arts & Media we offer a range of short, intensive professional courses all designed to meet the increasingly diverse needs of today’s multimedia producer and educator.
All our professional courses are delivered by practising media professionals and educators who bring with them cutting-edge industry knowledge. Many of our courses include masterclasses delivered by broadcast media experts.
Creating tailor-made courses to suit your business is one of our strengths and we can provide a selection of production content and/or technical courses covering a range of genres from factual or fiction through to comedy and sport.
All courses take place MediaCityUK, a leading international hub for more than 200 creative and digital businesses and a few steps away from iconic broadcasters, the BBC and ITV. The facilities at our MediacityUK site are amongst the best in the world including one of the largest HD screens in Europe, two industry standard HD TV studios, three radio studios, fully virtual 3D sets and green screen systems.
Developing animation skills
A hands-on technical course designed to enhance professional animation skills and how to apply them to current work. Starting with exercises in workflows using Maya, participants will learn how to follow the pipeline process from creating first images to compositing images in After Effects. Later in the course you will be able to develop a particular area of interest by developing creative new uses for traditional Stop Frame animation.
Intense animation skills
An intensive training course to develop animation skills - can be taken on its own or in conjunction with the Animation 1 course. Hands on experience in both industry standard and cutting edge animation. Includes exercises in workflows using Maya , learning how to follow the pipeline process from creating first images to compositing images in After Effects. Maya will be at used at an advanced stage building on the skills and images already used in Animation1. Also use of Renderman software developed by Pixar for the film industry.
Using mobile technology to produce broadcast quality video – Analysing video techniques and examples of the best digital storytelling on the web. How to find stories and tell them in a compelling narrative and to develop advanced storytelling techniques. Overview of the different technical needs of the VJ, including file types, codec and frame rates. Use of different cameras and microphones, including minicams and mobile phones to produce high quality video. To include with professional video journalists, analysing the work that they have produced and learning from they how they find and tell stories.
Skills enhancement for current industry practitioners using sophisticated editing software systems. Practical sessions and master classes from leading media industry practitioners. Use of high end post production techniques such as Blackmagic’s Davinci Resolve grading software and Adobe’s Nuke and Autodesk’s Smoke packages .To include full day of hands on training in Blackmagic’s Davinci Resolve colour grading software which will be led by a professional colourist and two days of hands on training in use of Adobe’s professional compositing software After Effects enabling use of animated graphics and Green Screen effects.
This course is designed to enable participants to create original story ideas blend their local narrative tradition with the dominant aspects of transatlantic, primarily American, film screen writing. Focussing on theme, theme conflict and genre, this course will blend, in terms of narrative, the local with the universal – story ideas adapted for audiences around the world. The course will begin by looking at theme and the main film genres in order to shape the way the stories are to be told and issues of structure, plot, causality and character will also be addressed.
Participants will develop their own story in roundtable workshop groups where skills are honed both through the development of their own story and through the analysis of the stories of others.
At the end of the course participants will have in the treatment a blueprint for writing a first draft of a feature film script.
Storytelling across multi-platform
This intensive 4 day course will equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills to create stories that will engage your audience across a range of platforms – new and old. The business of storytelling and media has changed substantially in the last few years. The internet, social media and mobile have had a huge impact and there is more change around the corner. The media business is now multiplatform and interactive. And to survive, you must understand how storytelling has changed. This course integrates online, mobile, social, radio and television content in ways that enable your storytelling to reach a wider audience across a variety of platforms. You will learn about the development and writing, plus the production, distribution and delivery of interactive multiplatform stories.
Presenting and interviewing for TV
This course focuses on developing the technical and practical skills of presenting in live studios. The course will take place at the news studios in MediaCityUK, which offer autocue, multi-cameras and green screen technologies. Participants will develop skills for presenting to camera, reading autocue, writing scripts and talking to time. The course will also cover choosing and writing questions, how to set up and light your interview and make the best of the location and how to ask the right questions. Expert advice will be provided by professional TV presenters or newsreaders. Course participants will record a number of news bulletins, which can then be edited into a showreel for future use.
Developing ideas for TV dramas
This course is a very practical programme showing the methodology and technique for developing a TV drama series/serial. Participants work collaboratively to develop a television drama series or serial, pitching ideas for the project they will develop. Participants will learn about the script development process and apply creative collaborative skills in the artistic development and construction of a multi-part television project. They will learn how to how to create dramatic characters and storylines for television and how to plan, develop and execute collaborative script development.
In this course you will learn the key skills to make sure your TV or film production runs smoothly, efficiently and makes the best possible use of your budget and resources. The tuition will cover all aspects of the Production Manager’s role from scheduling and budgeting to negotiating artists contracts and media copyright/repeat fees with particular reference to the Entertainment sector. You will be taught by industry professionals with real case studies and exercises to work on to ensure you develop the skills to be able to deliver programmes to the highest professional standards - on time and on budget.
An intensive training course which includes industry expert master classes and masses of hands on practical training sessions in our industry standard HD TV Studios at MediaCityUK. We will cover a wide range of key creative and technical studio skills from camerawork and lighting to vision mixing and set design. Along with audio expertise and live directing and floor managing skills, participants will have the opportunity to understand how multi camera studio shoots are put together and how to enhance their quality through experience of working on state-of-the-art equipment. You will work together to produce a high quality studio show that demonstrates their newly acquired technical skills and creative confidence.

Together with Salford Professional Development, we’ve partnered with the Bauer Media Academy to launch a new range of CPD courses to deliver the skills needed by the digital, creative and media industries.
These short courses will take place on our MediaCityUK campus and will cover areas including media training, video promotion and production, digital strategy, crisis PR and public speaking.
