Unique stage performance of Radio 4 play to premiere at MediaCityUK

Thursday 20 March 2014

A special stage performance of innovative radio play Bad Elvis will be making its premiere at the University of Salford’s MediaCityUK campus on Friday 21 March.

Bad Elvis is a sign, dance and theatre musical based on a radio play that was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 last year. The play is written by Katie Hims, an award-winning playwright who has penned scripts in the past for BBC TV series Casualty, as well as many afternoon plays for radio.

It will be performed by touring company Signdance Collective International (SDCI) with the aim of opening up radio drama and making it accessible to everyone, but in particular for deaf people to enjoy.

SDCI Artistic Director David Bower, who stars in the play, is best known for his role as Hugh Grant’s brother in the film Four Weddings and a Funeral.

Bad Elvis, supported by Arts Council England, takes place in a surreal world set between a hotel lobby and function room. The audience will be part of the action, as guests at a wedding.

The evening performance includes a drinks reception and starts 5.30pm for 6.00pm, during which the audience will take part in a sign-karaoke, followed by a panel discussion on the visualisation of radio drama.

The Bad Elvis film will be broadcast on television later in the year and SDCI start a sell-out US tour including New York, North Carolina and Miami immediately following this Friday’s premiere.

The panel of speakers at the event include Sue Roberts, BBC Editor Audio Drama and The Verb (BBC Radio 3), who produced the radio play and is director of the stage production; Katie Hims, playwright; David Bower, Artistic Director SDCI, and Paul Bonham, Diversity Relationship Manager Arts Council England.

David Bower, SDCI UK Artistic Director said: “We have moved so far beyond sign interpretation that this sign dance music theatre production creates a whole new theatrical language.”
