Five Countries Trio Concert and Masterclass

Venue: Peel Hall, University of Salford
Neil Yates

In 1999 Neil Yates quit a lucrative life as a London session player to travel round the music festivals of Britain and Ireland in a caravan. Eventually settling by the sea in a North Wales beauty spot, and inspired by the coastal idyll, he created music that’s been described as "fresh, vibrant and original” (Jazz UK) and “a pointer to another path that jazz can take" (Sydney Morning Herald). A rare sound innovator and a "discreet virtuoso" (The Guardian) on the trumpet, his “mellow and breathy horn playing and spacious, ever so slightly mysterious compositions" (All About Jazz) have “the clarity of Miles Davis, but the rolls and turns come direct from Celtic music...wonderfully transcendent” (Metro). Yates' music "is both absolutely listenable and highly recommendable. In short, beautiful" (GAFFA, Denmark).

The Five Countries album was released in 2011 on Cardiff’s Edition Records to great acclaim. Today’s performance sees Yates perform the evocative music from the album in an intimate trio with Hungarian/Romanian acoustic guitarist Zsolt Bende and Jim Hart on vibraphone and percussion.

This year Yates was presented with a £20,000 endorsement of his artistry, receiving the Arts Council of Wales ‘Creative Wales Award 2012’.
