The University’s Art Collection Team in collaboration with our partner organisations are delighted to present a special talk by artist Mads Christensen on Saturday 12 December.

Get a behind-the-scenes look at a brand new light-based art work. In this artist talk from US-based Danish artist, Mads Christensen, you can learn all about Cathedral of Mirrors, a brand-new interactive installation coming to The Lowry Plaza from Saturday 12 – Sunday 27 December.

Cathedral of Mirrors comprises of 12 mirrored columns (each over 3.5 metres tall). In the day they reflect the viewer, while at night the internal LED lights behind the two-way glass react to human movement to ignite a Cathedral of Mirrors. This playful relationship, created by digital interactivity and human movement, encourages audiences to gather and weave through the 12 columns creating more light energy as more people assemble.

Mads Christensen grew up in Denmark but is now based in Los Angeles, California. An artist and software architect, Mads combines his learned skillsets with a desire to explore how patterns of light affect us emotionally. Mads uses custom circuitry, programming and lots of bright LEDs to create his art. Mads Christensen is represented by Timothy Yarger Fine Art, Beverly Hills.

Cathedral of Mirrors, at The Lowry Plaza from Saturday 12 – Sunday 27 December.

Cathedral of Mirrors is commissioned by Quays Culture with support from the University.
