Gateway Project

Over the next two and a half years we’re investing £136m in our buildings and facilities to create a word-class campus for staff and students. subjects.

As part of this investment, construction has started on new student accommodation at the heart of the campus and the ‘Gateway Project’ for arts and media

In September 2015 the doors will open to a brand new £81m student apartment complex with 1,367 bedrooms and high quality facilities. The bedrooms will have en-suite bathrooms and each apartment will have its own kitchen and lounge space. When students aren’t hard at work, leisure time will be spent at the onsite cinema, gym and TV and games room. Students will also benefit from shops, restaurants and cafés in a lively campus environment.

The University is also investing £55m in the Gateway Project which will open to staff and students in early 2016. The building has been designed to be a visually striking gateway to the campus which will greet staff and students entering the campus from Salford Crescent railway station. Although primarily a base for students from the School of Arts & Media, there will be space for students from other disciplines to study there too. Facilities will include a theatre, recording and photography studios, café areas, performance and rehearsal spaces, computer suites and lecture theatres.

A total of £30m has already been invested in our prime space at MediaCityUK which opened at the end of 2011. The 1,500 students studying at the heart of the North’s media industry are in a great position to start careers in the media, digital and creative industries, and there has been a surge in applications to study courses based at the MediaCityUK campus.

Last year we reopened the Chapman Building following a £9m refurbishment and extension programme which transformed its outdated 1960s architecture into a beautiful example of contemporary and environmentally-friendly design. The interior has been upgraded to include six lecture theatres equipped with the very latest technology and large screen displays, a series of learning and breakout spaces, plus a Fairtrade café with views across the campus.

This is an exciting time at the University of Salford as we create a fantastic environment for students and staff to enjoy campus life.
