Social Media buzzing with MediaCityUK opening

For Jon Corner, the opening of the University’s flagship building at MediaCityUK to students tomorrow will signify the culmination of years of hard work from a dedicated team.

It’s a case of the University practising what it preaches by using social media to encourage and participate in the conversation about this exciting move.

The social media campaign, launched by the University’s Press Office in the run-up to the opening, is integrated across Facebook, Twitter and Flickr.

It allows the University to share news and progress, respond to comments, encourage questions, follow the experts and, in general, stimulate the conversation about MediaCityUK and the opportunities that it brings to students, staff, research and business.

Matt Brittin, MD of Google UK, spoke to staff and students from the University at a special presentation at MediaCityUK. People were invited to submit questions to Matt via social media, to encourage a dynamic session.

Chris Larkin, Director of Communications at the University, said: “We believe that industry leaders like Matt will stimulate a vibrant discussion around the future of digital and the role that the University of Salford can now play.

“Social media will ensure the debate will develop, is shared and continues.”

The University was one of the first to launch a Twitter account, has more than 7,000 followers and is in 322 lists.

Chris added: “Our Vice-Chancellor was also one of the first to tweet and is also a prolific blogger.”

To support focused debate about the move, the University has specific MediaCityUK Twitter and Facebook accounts and the rapid growth in followers and likes is proving the interest in this area.
